Review: Samsung Gear IconX (2018)


Fully wireless earbuds are the closest thing you’ll get to piping music directly into your brain. While there are a number of options out there, Samsung’s latest IconX (2018) headphones are the company’s second bite of the apple. They’re far from perfect, but these buds get a lot of things right.
They have acceptable sound quality, for one. The bass won’t thump as loud as a great pair of (cheaper) wired headphones, and tracks will occasionally sound shallow and synthetic, like your music is being run through a few filters, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying my favorite songs.
They also come with more than two times the battery life of their 2016 predecessors—a little more than 4 hours of battery life most days I used them.
Like last year, the IconX are still discrete and subdued in appearance (unless you buy them in neon pink) with a plain plastic exterior and swappable silicone eartips and wingtips. The wingtips help the top of the buds snap into the upper portion of your outer ear. The default tips fit well in my ear, but depending on the shape of your ear’s antihelix (there’s a new word for you), you may have to dip into the alternate wingtip sizes to get a solid fit.
There are no buttons on the IconX, but oh how I wish there were. Instead of buttons, the earbuds have dinky touchpads on the sides, and they’re fickle as heck. After a week of use, it still takes me two or three tries to successfully swipe up or down to change the volume. I’ve finally developed the muscle memory to get to the next track (two taps) and the previous track (three taps), but I don’t think I’ll ever successfully pull off more complex gestures. I feel like I deserve a graduate certificate in Morse code after using these.

The most useful gesture is Tap and Hold, which lets you cycle through the menu options: Voice Command, Ambient Sound and Start a Workout. Voice Command leverages Bixby or Google Assistant to give you answers, though the assistant’s voice often seems muffled.
Ambient Sound amplifies the noises around you, so you can still hear things while wearing the buds. Like any snug-fit earbuds, the IconX tend to hush the sounds of say, incoming traffic. Look both ways, and enable this feature when you need it.
The buds don’t track heart rate like last year’s model, but they will give you a rough (very rough) approximation of the distance you traveled and steps you took during a workout. Samsung’s Bixby woman-like voice talks to you while you run, encouraging you to speed up and updating you on your distance. To get a better idea of your workout in progress, I recommend bringing along a phone or Gear Sport watch.
The downside to the fitness coaching feature is that one of your earbuds will drain a lot faster than the other. The choice of which Samsung leaves up to you, but expect a half hour less juice from one of your buds.
The complex gestures and 4-hour battery life would be more forgivable if the Gear IconX had a power button. Annoyingly, you can’t power either earbud up or shut them off without carrying an accessory: the included clamshell charging case. It’s about the size of a fat, short pill bottle that pops open and snaps closed. The buds only turn off once they’re inside it, and on when they are pulled out. That’s also the only way to re-pair them with your phone via Bluetooth.
The case provides about two full charges before you need to plug it into the wall and juice it up, which is nice. My hangup with this included accessory is that it’s just a little too big to slip into a pocket with my usual accoutrements. And it’s less of an accessory than a necessity.
My buds didn’t last long outside of their box. It’s strange that even though the buds know when they’re out of my ears thanks to a sensor, they aren’t intelligent enough to automatically shut off, too. They seem to keep getting notifications, and if I start a workout and they’re within distance, they pretend they’re my running buddy, knowing full-well I’m not wearing them. Shouldn’t they be smarter than that? Just sitting on my coffee table, unused with a 75% charge, both drained in under a work day’s time.
The best advice I can give you to conserve battery is to load up the 4GB of onboard storage on the IconX with MP3s instead of streaming music and turn off all notifications. That’ll give you an extra couple hours of juice, according to Samsung.
These buds also worked best when I used them with a Galaxy S8. On another Android phone, the connection was less reliable, cutting out for a second whenever I pocketed my phone. They’re also compatible with iPhones, but you’ll have access to fewer features.
At $200, the Gear IconX (2018) are $40 more than Apple’s now-famous AirPods, but overall aren’t wildly expensive, given their capabilities. They offer some solid fitness features and 4+ hours of battery life per charge. I just wish I didn’t feel the need to lug the bulky clamshell with me every time I use them.

The Astounding Engineering Behind the Giant Magellan Telescope


It's easy to miss the mirror forge at the University of Arizona. While sizable, the Richard F. Caris Mirror Laboratory sits in the shadow of the university's much larger 56,000-seat football stadium. Even its most distinctive feature—an octagonal concrete prominence emblazoned with the school's logo—looks like an architectural feature for the arena next door. But it's that tower that houses some of the facility's most critical equipment.
Inside the lab, a narrow, fluorescent-green staircase spirals up five floors to the tower's entrance. I'm a few steps from the top when lab manager Stuart Weinberger asks, for the third time, whether I have removed everything from my pockets.
"Glasses, keys, pens. Anything that could fall and damage the mirror," he says. Weinberger has agreed to escort me to the top of the tower and onto a catwalk some 80 feet above a mirror 27.5 feet in diameter. A mirror that has already taken nearly six years—and $20 million—to make. "Most people in the lab aren't even allowed up here," he says. That explains Weinberger's nervousness about the contents of my pockets (which are really, truly empty), and why he has tethered my camera to my wrist with a short line of paracord.

The disc of glass below me is one of seven mirrors that will eventually comprise the Giant Magellan Telescope. When it turns on in full force in 2025, at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile's Atacama Desert, the GMT will be the largest optical observatory in the world. Its mirrors, each of which weighs roughly 17 tons, will be arranged in a flower-petal configuration, with six asymmetrical mirrors surrounding a central, symmetrical segment. Together, they will span some 80 feet (twice the diameter of existing optical telescopes) and possess a total area of 4,000 square feet (about the area of two singles tennis courts). With a resolving power 10 times that of the Hubble Space Telescope, the GMT is designed to capture and focus photons emanating from galaxies and black holes at the fringes of the universe, study the formation of stars and the worlds that orbit them, and search for traces of life in the atmospheres of habitable-zone planets.
But before GMT can do any of that, the scientists and engineers at the Mirror Lab need to manufacture these colossal slabs of glass. And doing so, as you might expect, is a truly monumental task.
"These are some of the most difficult mirrors ever manufactured. They're off-axis, they're aspheric, very large and ultra precise," Mirror Lab associate director Jeff Kingsley tells me after I descend from the tower. "Our goal is to get to a point where it takes four years, start to finish, for each mirror." The first mirror, though, took close to a decade to produce. The second segment—the one Weinberger just risked me destroying—started production in January of 2012 and won't be finished until 2019.

The Mirror Lab currently houses four GMT mirrors in various stages of development, with the latest beginning its arduous production process just this week. The first step is to cast the mirror by loading 20 tons of E6 borosilicate glass blocks into an immense, rotating furnace—by hand. Inside, 1,700 hexagonal pillars form a honeycomb-shaped mold that itself took six months to build. Over the course of several days, the furnace heats to over 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit and revs up to just shy of five rotations per minute. The glass, now liquefied, flows into the negative space of the honeycomb, while the rotation forces the molten sludge to the edges of the mold, giving the mirror its concave shape.
It takes three months for the furnace to return to room temperature. Only then can lab staff remove the mirror, stand it upright, and, with the help of a jury-rigged elevator system, give the thing a high-pressure bath. "We actually blast it with a car-wash wand," Kingsley says. "We had a grad student from the university's mining department come and optimize it for cleaning the glass."
From there, lab members flip the mirror face-down onto a giant, air-powered hovercraft and transfer it to the facility's central chamber, which houses two mirror-polishing stations. These remove about half a centimeter of glass from the back of the cast. Once it's smooth, Mirror Lab staff secure 165 load-spreaders to the mirror's backside—where the actuators will attach when the scope is finally erected in the Atacama Desert.

Then the lab members flip the mirror face-up—and the difficult work begins.
The GMT's six outer mirror segments—the petals on the flower, if you will—are all irregularly shaped. Their contours are topographically identical to a Pringle potato chip, albeit far more subtle; the curves are impossible to spot with the naked eye, but they make shaping the mirror a royal pain in the ass.
“We want the telescope to be limited by fundamental physics—the wavelength of light and the diameter of the mirror—not the irregularities on the mirror’s surface,” says optical scientist Buddy Martin, who oversees the lab's grinding and polishing operations. By “irregularities,” he’s talking about defects bigger than 20 nanometers—about the size of a small virus. But when the mirror comes out of the mold, its imperfections can measure a millimeter or more.

A few passes of coarse machining can whittle those imperfections to a scale of 20 microns—about a quarter of the width of a human hair. But those errors are still 1,000 times larger than they should be.
It's here that the Mirror Lab's tower comes into play. At its peak, mounted to the same scaffolding I just stood on, is a suite of lasers and interferometers that act like a tape measure for those sub-micron imperfections. The measuring process is so sensitive, the mirror has to sit on a pneumatic system to decouple it from the building's movement. "There's vibrations from the football stadium, traffic on adjacent streets, helicopters on their way to the hospital," Martin says. "You can't feel them standing here, but the measurements are very sensitive."
The sensors in the test tower create a contour map of the mirror's surface. Feed that map into the polishing machines, and they'll remove all the mirror's high spots. But not all at once. For more than a year, the mirror will move back and forth between the test tower and the polishing stations, until it's been smoothed within a millionth-of-an-inch of its life.
Only then is a mirror permitted to depart the lab. The first of GMT's segments left the facility in September, to make room for its incoming siblings. Today, it sits in a temporary storage facility near Tucson International Airport, awaiting shipment to the Atacama desert, where a 100-nanometer-thin coating of aluminum will complete its long transformation from a 20-ton heap of glass chunks into a cosmos-combing reflective surface.
"You know, you could argue that we don't even make mirrors here," Martin says. "All we make are big pieces of glass."

Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition (2017) Review: A Sturdy Tablet for Your Tot


In order to lend strict verisimilitude to the product testing flow, I unboxed the Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition when my toddler discovered the box sitting on my desk.
As cries of “Pink iPad? My pink iPad?” filled the air, I faced a split-second decision: Hide it, explain that not everyone gets everything they want all the time, and deal with the nuclear fallout as the four-month-old screamed in sympathy and dinner burned on the stove? Or take the path of least resistance and hope that the arrival of food would distract her?

The choice was clear. I sliced the box open, plugged it in, logged in, popped the kid in a chair and ordered Alexa to “watch Peppa Pig”. The whole process took three minutes, which left me 17 peaceful, tranquil minutes to get dinner on the table.
No matter your personal feelings on kids and screen time, most parents will admit that a screen is a fast and effective way to pacify these miniature personifications of pure id. The criteria for a child’s tablet is different from that of an adult’s. A kid’s tablet has to be bomb-proof, it has to have easy controls for the kids (and for the parents), and it has to be able to summon child-friendly content in no fewer than six seconds. The Fire 7 Kid’s Edition meets those requirements, and it does so at the reasonable price of $100.
You might ask: In what universe is $100 a reasonable price for a child’s toy, especially when the regular Fire 7 costs only $50? First, there’s the kid-friendly case, which runs for about $10. Also, each Kids Edition comes with a year’s free subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited. FreeTime is the default home screen on the device and comes with a limited amount of kid-friendly content. You can monitor the child’s usage via the FreeTime app in the parent profile, or online. But FreeTime Unlimited costs $5 per month ($3 if you’re a Prime subscriber) and has unlimited age-appropriate content for kids between the ages of three and 12, including books, videos, games, and curated websites.

In addition to those savings on content, you also get a two-year, worry-free guarantee. If your kid breaks the tablet, Amazon replaces it free of charge. In three days, my daughter covered it with a mysterious miasma of toddler goop, a sticky substance that uses either strawberry jelly or spaghetti sauce as its base. She dropped it off tables. Dogs stepped on it.
A four-year-old acquaintance discovered that a great way to get Daddy’s attention was to smash the tablet’s screen onto a tabletop corner. Amazon replaced three tablets in three consecutive months. If you think $100 is a lot to pay for a kid’s toy, imagine how much you’ll have to shell out when that kid gets his hands on your iPad.

You Know, For Kids

Many of our criticisms of the adult edition apply. The rear-facing speaker is terrible, and made much worse by the fact that the sound has to emerge from a tiny tunnel through a half-inch of protective pink foam. Grand-père and Daddy Tiger’s deep growls in Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood were buzzy. The Fire 7 also does not come with an HD display, which was noticeable with some of the sharper computer-generated animations in FreeTime. 11.1 GB of usable internal storage also does not seem like very much storage, although you can add a memory card.
However, while these limitations would be pretty irritating to an adult, they just don’t apply to the Fire’s target audience. The tablet’s small size (the 8.7 by 5.5-inch measurements apply with the puffy case on) makes it ideal for tiny hands. And I don’t think four-year-olds care if Angelina Ballerina’s whiskers look a little fuzzy. The FreeTime cartoons were bright and easy to see, both indoors and outside in natural light.
While 11.1 GB of usable internal storage might not be that much storage for an adult who wants to enjoy all the spectacular scenery in Mad Max: Fury Road, a best-quality episode of Tumble Leaf only takes up 0.15 GB. There’s room for plenty of beautiful, intricate, stop-motion animation, and that’s only if you download the highest-quality video.
It took me eight hours to run down the battery by playing videos and surfing the web, but again, this factor seems irrelevant on a child’s tablet that, thanks to the FreeTime nannyware features, cuts off after an hour’s use and is locked from 8 pm to 7 am. Over three days of toddler use and parent fiddling, we ran down the battery down to 54 percent.
Of course, even with severely curtailed expectations, some things are unsatisfactory. For instance, you enable parental control, Alexa is blocked—even on parent profiles. It’s also hard to tell what content you’ll be able to access at any given time. For example, if you know you’ll be traveling and offline, you can download books and apps off FreeTime, but not videos. To download a video, you have to switch to a parent profile, download content off Amazon Video and then whitelist it into FreeTime. Then those videos expire after 48 hours if you’re not connected to the internet. It seems like a roundabout way of preventing your family from going to a remote cabin on vacation.
I found the constant switching between profiles to access this content or that content to be tiring, with the additional wrinkle that all this switching back and forth, relaxing some restrictions and putting them back up again, requires both your parental password and your parental PIN. Get used to your significant other or caregiver texting you a lot for help with the Pink iPad.
So I’m holding back from a full endorsement. Also, as with the adult versions of these tablets, the $130 Fire 8 Kids Edition is a more enjoyable experience overall. But for $30 less, the Fire 7 Kids Edition is a perfectly serviceable device for children under six. It’s portable and durable enough to shove into a diaper bag on your way out the door, and a few minutes and megabytes was all it took to entertain the three-year-old long enough to get seated, order food and wait for it to arrive.
We ate together! In a restaurant! As a family! For the first time in a month! It’s hard to put a price on that.
