Previously, tuberculosis patients came to Davos. But the fresh air is still tempting today - and for a long time no longer only sick.
The sun shines on the balcony, a padded lounger, the church bell rings - one goes by itself into a Luftliegekur over. This was the method of healing, in which the patients were mainly to lie, breathe and drink. The German-born physician Alexander Spengler practiced this therapy 150 years ago in Davos. Slept was drunk on terraces of sanatoriums, in lounges or, if necessary, in the cowshed, Veltliner. Actually, the cure was for tuberculosis patients, but since rumbars and drinking water are indeed pleasant activities, the couching also soon established itself among healthy people - a main reason for the success of Davos as a holiday destination.
The former »Sanatorium Sursum« is now called »Hotel Edelweiss«. The young operators, Arabelle and Tom Umiker, carefully modernized the well one hundred years old art nouveau building, the 35 rooms were dusted and spoiled with discreet design elements. The house chapel, where once nuns were praying, was converted into double saddles, instead of the showers, there are now modern bathrooms and a small sauna. There are the colorful glass windows, the large balconies, the elegant dining room and the elevating view of the three thousand people. You can still taste wine and sleep - still on the wine list are really good bottles of Graubünden, the Ticino and Italy.
